THE BUYING GUIDE
Network cameras send video over an IP network to a recorder, supported software or another configured destination. Choosing a camera is about the scene you need to see: a wide overview, a doorway or a more distant point of interest. Resolution matters, but so do lens choice, mounting position and the light available when the scene is busiest. Plan recording and network connections alongside the camera.
List the target areas, approximate viewing distances, daytime and night lighting, cable routes and retention needs. This makes it easier to compare cameras on useful evidence rather than headline megapixels.

Match the lens and mounting position to the area and target distance. A wide view covers more space; it does not automatically provide the detail needed at every point.
Compare low-light performance, IR or white-light options and backlight handling. Check the scene at the time of day that matters most.
Confirm PoE or separate power requirements, stream settings and recorder support. Check whether local storage is supported and which card capacity is allowed.
Match the enclosure, temperature range and mounting accessory to the site. Check the exact dimensions, connectors and cable route.
