THE BUYING GUIDE

A stable picture needs a dependable connection.

Transmission equipment connects cameras, recorders and other network devices across a site. Plan the physical route and the traffic that crosses each link, then check port speeds, uplink capacity and the power required at the edge. The right design leaves room for expansion without assuming that every Ethernet port provides PoE or that every switch has the same power budget.

Start with the application.

Describe the job, the installation environment and the equipment already on site. Compare the exact model specifications before choosing; a collection name alone does not establish compatibility or included features.

Four checks before you choose.

Start with the details that affect your installation.

01 / PORTS

Device count & uplinks

Count endpoint and uplink connections separately. Compare link speeds and the traffic that must pass through shared links.

02 / POWER

Per-port & total PoE

Match the endpoint power standard and maximum demand to both the port limit and total switch budget.

03 / DISTANCE

Copper, fibre or wireless

Select the link type from the route and documented distance limits. Include suitable modules, connectors and power arrangements.

04 / OPERATIONS

Management & environment

Check required network controls, mounting, operating temperature and access for maintenance.

PLAN THE POWER

Check the load.
Leave room to grow.

Estimate combined endpoint demand from device count and the maximum power specified for each device.

ESTIMATED DEVICE LOAD96 W

24 W of budget remaining

For identical loads; otherwise add the documented maximum draw of each device. Account for cable losses and operating conditions, and allow spare capacity. This arithmetic does not verify PoE standard, per-port compatibility or the power available at the device.

A few useful answers.

Talk through your requirements with us ↗

Is a PoE port count the same as a power budget?

No. A switch can have enough ports but insufficient total power for all connected devices.

Will any PoE switch power a PTZ?

Check the PTZ power requirement and supported PoE standard, plus the individual port and overall switch limits.

Are optical modules included?

Check the exact supplied configuration and module compatibility, speed and fibre type.

Can I use a long cable run without extra equipment?

Check the documented distance limits of the chosen devices and cable. Plan supported alternatives for longer routes.
