THE NVR BUYING GUIDE
A network video recorder brings your IP camera footage into one place for recording, playback and export. The right choice starts with your cameras, your network and how long you need to keep the footage.
For a small shop, you may want straightforward setup and a compact recorder. A larger site may need more camera channels, additional drive bays or different viewing arrangements. Start with the job you need the system to do, then compare the exact model specifications.
Camera count is only one part of the decision. Incoming bandwidth, decoding performance, camera compatibility and storage capacity each have a separate role.
Explore practical NVR guidesCompare the details that affect everyday use.
Allow for the cameras you need now and any planned additions. Check incoming bitrate limits as well as resolution, frame rate and simultaneous decoding.
Understand recording & playbackIntegrated PoE ports can simplify some installations; an external PoE switch offers another layout. Check both per-port support and the total power budget.
Read the PoE guideMatch drive type, bay count and per-drive capacity to the recorder. Estimate storage from the actual stream bitrate and your recording schedule.
Estimate your storageCheck the camera model, supported protocols and firmware. Video streaming, audio, PTZ control and analytics may have different compatibility requirements.

Drive inclusion depends on the exact product and configuration. Check the listing or confirm the required drive capacity with us before ordering; the number of HDD bays does not mean drives are included.
Check both devices’ supported ONVIF profiles, firmware and the recorder’s compatibility information. Confirm the features you need individually, including recording, audio, PTZ and event handling.
Some cameras can connect to a recorder’s integrated PoE ports when the model supports them. Check port count and power capacity. Other network layouts use an external switch; choose the layout that fits your site.
Retention depends on the number of streams, their actual average bitrate, recording hours and usable storage. Use the estimator above as a starting point, then check the NVR’s HDD limits and the final recording settings.
